Who We Are and What We Do
The Santa Clarita Valley Teachers Association is a cluster of six chapters of the California Teachers Association/National Education Association representing education professionals throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. The six chapters include Castaic Teachers Association, Hart District Teachers Association, Newhall Teachers Association, Newhall Educational Support Personnel, Saugus Teachers Association, and Sulphur Springs District Teachers Association.
The membership of these groups includes approximately 2,400 teachers, counselors, librarians, psychologists, speech therapists, and other educational support personnel. The majority of these people live and work in the Santa Clarita Valley. They are committed to ensuring that Santa Clarita public schools continue to provide the best educational opportunities available to Santa Clarita Valley youth.
For nearly two decades the member chapters of the Santa Clarita Valley Teachers Association have been involved in a variety of endeavors designed to enhance professional growth opportunities for local educators; encourage collaborative relationships among students, teachers, and parents; strengthen quality teaching standards; and advocate for educators, students, and the community by keeping quality education a priority goal for the Santa Clarita Valley.
Some of the activities and projects that the Santa Clarita Valley Teachers Association has been involved in include:
1.Maintaining a Local National Board Network: Provides assistance to local teachers attempting to complete the rigorous process of achieving National Board Certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
2.Supporting a Local Staff Development Cadre: Provides workshop and seminar presentations for local teachers seeking training, enrichment, and professional growth in a variety of professional domains.
3.Community MegaSkills Trainings: Workshop presentations bringing teachers, parents, and students together to learn about effective strategies for improving student learning. These presentations, based on a model developed nationally by the National Education Association, have been successfully implemented locally at elementary, junior high, and senior high school campuses.
4.Local/State School Bond/School Construction Campaigns: Active in all major state and local school bond campaigns for many years, providing voter calling stations and volunteer efforts to get out the vote to help pass bonds for our local schools.
5.Scholarship Contributions: Either through contributions to the Santa Clarita Scholarship Foundation or through other practices, member chapters yearly provide thousands of dollars for scholarship grants to local Santa Clarita Valley students for post-high school education.
6.Political Advocacy for Local Schools: Leaders within member chapters regularly act as liaisons to state and federal lawmakers, encouraging executive and legislative officials to keep public education as a priority issue in yearly legislative agendas.
7.Member of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce: A supportive member of the local Chamber of Commerce, SCVTA recognizes the importance of maintaining a healthy economic community that values the rewards that come with having a quality local public education system.
8.SCV PTA Partners: Santa Clarita Valley Teachers Association is also a proud member of the local Santa Clarita Valley PTA Partners Program. Our participation in this program, which supports PTA efforts at schools throughout Santa Clarita, is further evidence of out commitment to work collaboratively with parents and the community in support of excellence in public education.
9.Platinum Sponsor, Santa Clarita Valley Teacher Tribute: SCVTA, along with the California Teachers Association, has been a yearly Platinum Sponsor of the Santa Clarita Valley Teacher Tribute, arranged by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation.
