Governor’s drastic proposal to slash at least $4.8 billion in education funds statewide.

The group called upon members of the Legislature to uphold Proposition 98, the minimum school funding guarantee, and reject the draconian proposed cuts to schools and student services, and seek other remedies to the state’s dilemma.

The proposed statewide cuts for the 2008-09 school year would mean approximately $25 million less for the elementary, high school and community college districts of the Santa Clarita Valley, which will result in increased class sizes, reduced per-student spending and possible workforce reductions affecting, but not limited to, bus drivers, janitors, food service workers and other education professionals. It may lead to reductions of class offerings at the higher education level.

The rally’s participants included representatives, parents, students, teachers and employees from the following Districts:

Castaic Union School District

College of the Canyons

William S. Hart Union High School District

Newhall School District

Saugus Union School District

Sulphur Springs Union School District
